Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which BIX wood joiner biscuit is right for my needs?

Bix Sizes 20, 10 and 0 are compatible with any commercially available biscuit slot-cutting machine with a blade diameter of 100mm and a slot kerf of 4mm. The size you use depends upon the size of the board or the frame you are using. Use the larger size biscuit wherever possible for strength.

Bix Size 5 is ideal for joins where slot space is limited e.g. picture frames or door frames. The minimum door/picture frame width is 35mm. The maximum frame rebate is 7mm. The 120 degree angle 'cut out' design feature eliminates biscuit interference with timber or glass infill panels inserted in the door/picture frame rebate.

How do I achieve joint bonding?

Joint bonding is achieved using Bix wood joiner biscuits and any high quality PVA glue. This glue, being water based, assists in expanding the biscuit thickness to make a nice, tight join.

About Bix Products

Bix Products is a perfect example of a creative family business. Bix Products was founded by Neville Shaw, soon joined by his wife June and eldest son Howard. Sharing a love of timber with Howard, and seeing the need for locally made and readily available wood joiner biscuits, it all began in 1987 when Neville started working on the idea.

The first factory premises occupied were at Beenleigh in Queensland and the business really became 'fair dinkum' when Neville's product got a name, with the creation of the BIX registered trademark. The need for purpose-built machinery brought out all of Neville's ingenuity and with the team, he has devised or invented feeders for punches for each size and the various die-sets for each size of biscuit

But the search was always on. For what? The manufacture of quality Australian wood joiner biscuits requires the right timber. This has entailed quite a journey and lots of research. Today, BIX wood joiner biscuits are wholly manufactured from plantation-grown Australian hoop pine.

Why is Australian hoop pine the right timber?

Unlike most other softwood timbers, the growth rings in hoop pine are almost non-existent, which provides a stable texture of timber across the grain and minimises the tendency for splitting

Along the way, Bix Products relocated to larger premises in beautiful Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast of NSW. A milestone occured in 1995 when Bix Products purchased the Wintersteiger thin-cutting frame saw and blade-sharpening device from Austria. This revolutionised production and shortly after, Bix began exporting to New Zealand.

In 2005, Bix products moved again to a larger manufacturing facility in Port Macquarie. Now capably managed by eldest son Howard, Bix Products moves proudly into the future, hand in hand with Australia's tradesman, handymen and retailers of quality wood and timber products
